Hello P106, here is some information about life in Scotland. Hope they will give you some idea of what to expect in UK. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any enquiries.

Are we allowed to work in Scotland?
Yes we are able to work at UK with a limit of 20 hours per week. However, there are people who work beyond that limit during holiday. Some of them need to pay certain amount of tax for that. It depends on the employer as well. You can check with your employer next time or the Home Office for further information.

How about the timetable in UK?
Semester 6 is very hectic. You will either have 7 hours lecture a day or 6 hours lab a day. You won’t have time to work actually unless you are willing to spend your time working instead of doing revision. Semester 7 is slightly better. You will have 2 or 3 days classes each week, mean while you have to start doing your research project. Semester 7 is a better time for you to work to earn some expanses.

How much is the living expanses in UK?
If you cook your own food at home, you are able to live with 15pounds a week. Average amount would be 15-20 pounds a week depend on individual. Let’s give you some example, 1 set McD cost around 5 pounds, 4kg rice 1.90pounds, 2Liter Pepsi 1 pounds, 2.5kg chicken portions 3pounds.

How is the weather at Scotland?
Summer is the warmest season here although the temperature varies throughout the day around 10-20 Celsius. Is autumn over here now, the temperature might fall down to 0 Celsius early morning. You can check the webpage Metoffice and type down the postcode G4 0NG to have a look on the weather here. Most of the days here are gloomy. Summer, long day time short night time. Sunset around 10pm. How is the life in Glasgow?
Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland. Our hostel is located at the city area where you have easy access to supermarket and shopping malls. Is just about 15 minutes walking from hostel to the city center. There are many nice pub and restaurant around so you can have a cup of drink and enjoy hanging around with your friends. There are many place of interested as well. You can simply search online for information. I will recommend a webpage named Virtual Tourist. It is a very helpful travel guide for travelling. Or, you can get more tips from your senior here. For sure, everything is much expansive compare to Malaysia. However, it will be much more affordable when you work over. The pay is 5.62 per hour if you are 22 years old. For those who are 21 years old, you will be paid slightly lower around 5.30 per hour. You are able to get a free trip with 10 to 12 working days. Wonderful isn’t?

That’s all from me for now. Please email me at limweimeng@hotmail.com,
if you have any enquiries. I will be happy to answer your questions.

All the best to P106 and see you in Glasgow very soon.
